Focus on student needs

“I am saying that unless we pay attention to what students need,

we will continue to have trouble teaching the basics successfully.”

  1. I couldn’t agree more. As a counselor I have found that my approach to teaching children is inherently different from a lot of teachers approaches. I have had tremendous results teaching my children by meeting them where they are. I believe all children are different and if a child is not able to concentrate in school we should address their need instead of punish them. Studies have shown that children learn better when they are less anxious, depressed, and frustrated.

    • When I was in teachers’ college we were introduced to the concept of discipline with dignity with a focus on student needs: if you address the need you address the behaviour. It was very eye-opening for me. Even the simple act of letting students eat a snack during first period made so such a difference. It is awesome to hear from someone who espouses this belief. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I really hope to hear more of your insight. 🙂
